Priesthood

A priest's distinctive role in the Church is to preach the Gospel and to minister the sacraments, and this is certainly true for Marist priests. All priests baptize, anoint the sick, reconcile through confession, witness at weddings and, of course, celebrate Mass. They might do this as parish priests, chaplains, or teachers; at retreat centers, hospitals, nursing homes, prisons; for the poor, the sick and suffering -- all those hungering for the peace that is Jesus Christ.

What makes the Marist priest unique is the spirit of Mary he brings to his priesthood. This is evident in the manner in which he greets people, the style of his teaching, the manner of his life. His priesthood becomes fashioned by his prayer and by the fellow Marists with whom he lives.  Community life allows him the brotherly support and the connectedness to the human condition that broadens his perspective. The Marist Priest takes Mary, the mother of mercy as his model in ministry. She is model of faith and servant leadership. In the same way, the Marist priest preaches and ministers in concrete, human ways, and attempts to bring God to others sacramentally, personally and through the Word of God, as indeed Mary brought the Word into the world.
