Brotherhood

Not all Marists are priests. Some Marists are called to serve in the brotherhood.  Similar to the priesthood, it is a way of ministering the Gospel of Jesus Christ, though not through the sacraments and preaching. A brother of the Society of Mary might serve in a high school as a teacher, counselor or chaplain.  He might work as a scholar. He might do practical work as a carpenter, plumber or handyman, alongside laymen.  He might be the administrator of a retreat house, or work at a parish as a pastoral assistant, youth minister, or catechist.  He might work on foreign mission in any and every role! His personal and communal prayer, as well as his experience of living with other brothers and priests, enriches Marist life and ministry.

In embracing the vocation of a brother, this Marist is a living reminder of the importance of brotherhood in the life of the Society. He is also a sign to laymen and women everywhere of radical commitment to the Gospel. The brother of the Society of Mary preaches the Gospel by his actions and presence.  He is rooted in his life by prayer and grounded by the fraternal life he shares with other Marists, all living the same vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience.
