Manawatu Youth Ministry Ko Ruahine te pae maunga. Hato Paora College began in 1947, under the leadership of Fr Issac Gupwell SM. Situated in the Manawatu region, Hato Paora is a Catholic boarding school for Māori boys. Since its inception up until the present, Marists have worked at the College in various capacities.
These days Marists at Hato Paora provide chaplaincy, are involved in the pastoral care of students, and are striving to connect with as many families of the boys as possible. They also assist in providing educational and recreational opportunities for students, from coaching golf and chess to teaching music. The current contribution on behalf of the Society of Mary at Hato Paora is made by a community of three priests resident in near-by Feilding. Fr Chris Martin, came to Hato Paora in 2003 having worked all his Marist life in Māori communities and in parishes. The senior member of the community is Fr Des Darby, who taught in several Marist colleges and worked as the Society of Mary's Bursar for a number of years. The other member of the team is Fr Damian Dempsey, who was ordained at the end of 2001 before taking up this ministry the following year. The Feilding Marists also spend one day a week working alongside the campus ministry team at St Peter’s College, the co-ed Catholic secondary school in Palmerston North.
