Budgeting and Advocacy The 1985 General Chapter of the Society of Mary asked all Marists to "give priority in their apostolates to work with the poor, especially with those who lack the minimum conditions to live a truly human life". The Chapter strongly encouraged Marists to associate themselves with the struggle of the poor with a view to helping the poor achieve social justice.
Since around that time Jeff Drane has been engaged in community development and adult education since 1990. As Co-ordinator of Budgeting and Advocacy and Adult education he has been guided in focus for ministry by the Principles and Practices of Structural and Cultural Analysis. The bases for this work is practical experience with those sectors of the population which are disadvantaged socially and economically. These people are mainly those dependent on Social Welfare entitlements Mental Health consumers newly arrived Migrants Refugees from Ethiopia, Somalia, Rwanda, Sudan and Assyrians and Kurds from Iraq. The work in Wellington South is appropriate because Housing NZ and Wellington City Council have the highest density of public housing in New Zealand in these suburbs. Over the last 12 years this work has been reviewed and modified regularly by use of Praxis Metholology that reflects on action, critiques through questions raised by Structural Analysis, lets the outcomes of reflection dialogue with Scripture and current theological thought, which leads to further action and reflection.
