Marists in Spain

The Marist presence in Spain begun at the end of the 19th century, when religious congregations were expelled from France. That situation moved the superior general to transfer the international scholasticate of Ste. Foy to Barcelona for 13 years.

Very soon Spanish vocations were accepted into the Society of Mary. The number grew steadily, working in Spain and in France, until 1936. The civil war marked a stop to the development of the Society. Nine young Marists were killed because they were religious and priests, others died or abandoned because of the persecution and the war.

The Marists had to start again in 1939, and many vocations arrived the next years, making it possible to be an independent Province in 1959. Because the Marists had no pastoral ministry in Spain at that time, many of them had to moved to Latin America and there they begun the mission of Peru.

The beginning of the 70's marked a second stop to the Marist development in Spain, this time due to the shortage of vocations and in 2000 the Province and became a Delegation, a small entity with 30 members, some of them still present in Peru and Mexico, and the others working in Spain in six different pastoral ministries.
