A Marist Way of Living

Marist Laity

The Society of Mary is a "tree with many branches". It was originally envisaged as a vast enterprise embracing all kinds of people: lay and religious, brother sisters and priests, all working for the same goal.

There are a variety of ways to live as a Marist. Living as a lay Marist is one such expression.

Some Marist laity join with others to form a group; a great variety is possible. No one person is excluded from being a Marist, each individual and group working in their own environment and according to their own vocation is welcome.

The essence of living a lay Marist life is in the committment to live in the spirit of Mary with a compassionate, missionary heart.

Marists have devotion to Mary. This devotion expreses itself in living in her spirit rather than in public manifestations. Marist devotion to Mary is personal and shapes their way of life, and it is not part of a Marist's vocation to propogate any special devotional practices to Mary. Any devotion Marists have towards Mary should be simple and unaffected, without drawing attention to itself.

One traditional form of simple Marist devotion is to pray the "We fly to your protection" and three Hail Mary's on rising and then again on retiring at the end of the day.

The Marist Laity in New Zealand is co-ordinated by Fr John Craddock sm and his assistant, Mrs Jane Langham.
